Wellington harbour is a deep water, natural harbour. It’s offical name is Port Nicholson and the Maori name for it is “Poneke”. The entrance to the harbour is well known for its rough water and rocky outcrops that saw the Wahine founder on them in a very bad storm in 1968, with the loss of 53 lives. It services commercial shipping, Cruise Liners and the Inter Island ferries. At the top end of the harbour is the Petone shoreline and behind it is the Hutt Valley. Over on it’s eastern shoreline is the pretty seaside town of Eastbourne.
