The mania for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is building up really fast. Only an ignorant handful of people who do not have any idea about soccer might not have heard about this event which takes place every year. 32 teams spread evenly in 8 groups will have their eyes set on a common goal.

Wales rated themselves a chance to knock off the Aussies at Cardiff and qualify top of the pool, but following their loss there they found themselves returning to Cardiff having to beat the Fijians to make the quarter finals. The Welsh faithful returned to Cardiff to watch their team play Fiji at the Millenium stadium.

When most people think of Argentina and their FIFA World Cup achievements the first name that comes to mind is the immortal Diego Maradona and his glittering, if often controversial performances on the world soccer stage in the eighties. That dazzling run ended in 1994 when he was sent home from the USA in disgrace after failing a drug test during the group phase.

For the first time, West Germany hosted the global tournament in July 1974. Historically Germany had been competitive in soccer. Under the leadership Franz (“Kaiser”) Beckenbauer, the host country-which never finished below sixth place since 1954– won the X FIFA World Tournament. Outside of the Berlin Olympics (1936) and the Munich Games (1972), this event was the largest ever held in Germany.
